South Africa cruising

Join us for an adventure unlike any other.

19 Jul 2027 - 7 Aug 2027
(20 days)

Embark on an epic 1,000 nautical mile adventure along South Africa's stunning southern coast, a journey that connects two oceans. Setting sail from Richards Bay, we'll make captivating stops in Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, and Mossel Bay.

Since our expedition departs in July, we are positioned in the heart of the world-famous Sardine Run. As billions of sardines migrate north along the coast, they create a feeding frenzy that is arguably the most spectacular marine event on the planet.

This incredible coastline is one of the world's most diverse. As we cruise, the lush stretch of the renowned Garden Route unfolds, offering a blend of pristine beaches, indigenous forests, and picturesque towns. The iconic Knysna Heads, two striking sandstone cliffs, stand as a major landmark at the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon. Our journey culminates in Cape Town, where the iconic Table Mountain, a global biodiversity hotspot, welcomes us to the "Mother City."

What to Expect: South Africa cruising

Sailing the "Cape of Storms" & Good Hope

Don't let the old nicknames fool you—while this coast demands respect, cruising South Africa is a glorious, high-adrenaline experience. We move between world-class harbors and rugged bays, navigating a coastline defined by towering cliffs, hidden kelp forests, and the legendary meeting point of two mighty oceans.

Life on Board

The Daily Rhythm

Who is this for?

  • Technical Seamanship: This is a fantastic leg for those who want to level up their sailing skills. You’ll be hands-on with the winches and the helm, learning how to handle a 70ft yacht in the "Cape Doctor" winds. It’s active, exhilarating, and incredibly rewarding.

  • Coastal Exploration: Our hops between ports like Knysna, Mossel Bay, and Simon’s Town allow for a perfect blend of sailing and shore-side adventure. You’ll help the crew navigate the "Heads" of Knysna—a narrow, thrilling passage between massive sandstone cliffs—and master the art of anchoring in the lee of the Cape Peninsula.

  • The ultimate "Ship-to-Shore" lifestyle: Expect a sophisticated mix of life. One night we’ll be barbecuing (a traditional South African braai) on deck in a secluded bay; the next, we’ll be docked in the heart of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, surrounded by world-class dining and history.

  • The Marine Big Five: South Africa is the world’s premier destination for marine wildlife. Because we sail in July, we are in the prime window for the Sardine Run. From the deck, you’ll have a front-row seat to breaching Humpback and Southern Right whales, massive pods of dolphins, and the 'bait ball' action that defines the Wild Coast.

  • The Landscapes: Every morning brings a new "postcard" view. You’ll sail past the Twelve Apostles mountains, round the iconic Cape Point, and finally witness the world-famous "tablecloth" cloud draping over Table Mountain as we approach Cape Town.

  • Wine & Culture: When we drop the hook or tie up, the adventure continues inland. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the nearby Constantia or Stellenbosch wine regions, or explore the rich maritime history of the "Graveyard of the East Indiamen."

This trip is for the active adventurer and the nature enthusiast. It is ideal for those who love "big" landscapes and don't mind a bit of spray on their face. If you want a trip that combines technical sailing, world-class wildlife spotting, and the vibrant culture of the "Rainbow Nation," this South African cruising leg is for you.

The Greatest Shoal on Earth: The Sardine Run

From the deck of Wind Shift, you’ll have a front-row seat to:

  • Super-pods of Dolphins: Thousands of common and bottlenose dolphins working together to "herd" the fish.

  • Aerial Bombardment: Cape Gannets diving from the sky like silver arrows.

  • The Giants of the Deep: Bryde’s whales and Humpbacks lunging through the bait balls, alongside various shark species following the feast.

The sardine run is a natural phenomenon relying on complex interrelation of currents, weather and animals. The run can be very hard to predict, however, during July, we can look for the run off Coffee Bay, Port St Johns and Mboyti.
