The Tasman Sea Ocean Crossing

10 Apr 2026 - 23 Apr 2026

(12 - 14 days)

1,200+ nautical miles. 12–14 days offshore.

One of the Southern Hemisphere’s great blue-water crossings.

Depart from Sydney Harbour.

Make landfall in Auckland.

Between those two ports lies the Tasman Sea — open water, real weather, proper watch systems and the quiet rhythm that only comes after several days beyond sight of land.

This is not a cruise.

There are no passengers.

You join as active crew.

Only 8 guest berths available.

Why This Passage Matters

The Tasman is a proving ground.

It has shaped offshore sailors for generations — demanding respect, rewarding competence. Crossing it under sail remains a genuine maritime milestone.

On this expedition you will:

  • Stand structured ocean watches (day and night)

  • Helm in open water under varying sail plans

  • Participate in navigation and weather routing

  • Experience landfall after a true offshore passage

  • Build meaningful offshore miles

For many, this becomes the passage they refer to for years

A Typical Day at Sea

Life quickly settles into rhythm.

  • 3-hour rotating watch system

  • Helming and sail trim rotation

  • Weather and navigation briefings

  • Shared meals prepared onboard

  • Maintenance checks and log entries

  • Long horizon, seabirds, changing skies

At night, the Southern Hemisphere sky opens above you.

Mid-passage, something shifts — conversation slows, focus sharpens, distractions fall away. Offshore sailing simplifies life.

The Route

Departure from Sydney Harbour.

We track east-north-east, adjusting for forecast systems, crossing deep Tasman water before approaching the Hauraki Gulf and making landfall in Auckland.

April is a considered seasonal window — outside cyclone season, yet still delivering favourable crossing patterns.

Passage duration: approximately 12–14 days depending on conditions.

Ocean sailing operates on weather, not on fixed arrival times. Flexibility is part of the discipline.

Safety & Preparation

Before departure, all crew receive:

  • Full safety briefing

  • Watch system induction

  • Man overboard procedures

  • Personal equipment guidance

  • Offshore preparation notes

The objective is calm, methodical seamanship — not theatrics.

We prioritise conservative decision-making and structured watchkeeping throughout.
