(16 days)

Embark on a 600 NM cruise to experience the best of the South Pacific, where volcanic landscapes and vibrant coastlines set the scene for incredible adventures. In Tonga's Vava'u region, find a tranquil paradise with pristine white-sand beaches. From late June, swim alongside humpback whales in their sheltered nursery waters. The healthy coral reefs offer perfect opportunities for snorkeling and diving, teeming with marine life. Then, journey to Samoa and American Samoa, where rugged volcanic mountains meet a diverse coast of white- and black-sand beaches and steep cliffs. The vibrant coral reefs create serene lagoons for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The clear, warm waters provide a playground for snorkeling, scuba diving, and exploring colorful marine life. On land, you can swim in unique natural wonders like the iconic To Sua Ocean Trench.

What to Expect: Tonga to Samoa

A Journey Across the Date Line

Sailing from the Kingdom of Tonga to Samoa is more than just an offshore passage—it’s a journey through the heart of Polynesia. This passage takes us across the International Date Line, where you’ll literally "gain" or "lose" a day at sea, adding a touch of magic to a classic blue-water crossing.

Life on Board

The Daily Rhythm

Who is this for?

  • Become the Crew: On Wind Shift, you are never just a passenger. Under the guidance of our professional skipper, you’ll be involved in every aspect of the voyage. You’ll learn to trim sails for the South Pacific trade winds, stand watch under a canopy of stars, and take the helm as we navigate toward the Samoan archipelago.

  • Tropical Blue-Water Sailing: This leg is famous for its steady "Tradewind" conditions. Expect 15–25 knots of breeze on the beam, warm spray over the bow, and some of the finest blue-water sailing conditions on the planet.

  • Small Team, Big Adventure: You’ll be sharing this experience with a small group of like-minded explorers. Our 70ft expedition yacht is designed for both performance and comfort, providing a safe, stable platform for ocean exploration.

  • At Sea: During the 2–3 day passage, life follows the rhythm of the ocean. You’ll experience the meditative peace of the open sea, the excitement of catching fresh Mahi-Mahi for dinner, and the camaraderie of the "dog watch" as the sun rises over the horizon.

  • In Port: We begin in the sheltered, turquoise waters of Vava'u, Tonga, exploring limestone caves and hidden lagoons. We conclude in Apia, Samoa, where the lush volcanic peaks and the "Fa'a Samoa" (the Samoan Way) offer a vibrant, cultural welcome.

This trip is perfect for those who want a "bite-sized" ocean passage. It’s long enough to experience the true feeling of being "offshore" but short enough to remain accessible for those new to expedition sailing. Whether you're a seasoned sailor looking to log miles or a traveler seeking a more authentic way to see the Pacific, this leg offers the perfect balance.
