Its rugged geography of steep cliffs and deep, lush valleys is a result of its volcanic origin. The island is most famous as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile from 1815 until his death. His former residence, Longwood House, remains a major historical site. Due to its extreme isolation, St. Helena is a biological treasure trove of endemic species, home to the world's oldest living land animal, Jonathan the Tortoise. The surrounding waters are also teeming with marine life, including a large seasonal aggregation of whale sharks.
